Hong Kong 2016: Day 1

The bf's cousins made his annual holiday and this time the destination is the land of dim sum-wan tan noodles-cityscape galore; HONG KONG! This is the most spontaneous trip in my experience: I booked the hotel+flight via AirAsiaGo a fortnight before the travel date and recent events occupied me to the point I could not prepare an itinerary beforehand! T.T
Hello container city!
In quick time I learned the general geography of HK - it comprise 3 islands and it's well connected thanks to the MTR:
Lantau Island - airport + HK Disneyland + Po Lin Monastery
New Territories - Kowloon + Tsim Sha Tsui + Mong Kok
HK Island - Central + Victoria Peak + Wan Chai + Causeway Bay

I wanted to include a day trip to Macau but we didn't manage to squeeze it in. We booked our stay at Metropark Wanchai Hotel - this hotel is within walking distance of the Wanchai station and we had a pleasant stay at the hotel. We got the Octopus card which can be used for all public transport; it can also be used at most groceries and shops in town. The hotel provided useful information regarding transport from the airport and we opted for the public bus to enjoy the scenic route across land and sea plus it was really affordable.
Moving between islands
After checking in, we headed to Central district in search for lunch -- the famous roast goose of Yat Lok (1 Michelin ★). We had to queue for a bit but it was worth it; the goose meat was succulent and tastes amazing even without the plum sauce. Plus no first meal in HK is complete without the iconic nai cha (milk tea)!
Get in line!

We slept in for several hours then headed out under light drizzle to Causeway Bay. We ended up at the street market at Jardine's Crescent. The rain got heavier and we took cover in a quiet simple shop selling tong sui (dessert). It was simply decadent to indulge in ridiculously smooth egg custard and thick sesame paste. The interior may be simple but the tong sui earned 5 ★ from me!

With warm tong sui in our bellies, we walked around town checking out the sights and sounds of Hong Kong. I like the quaint tall buildings and colonial architecture; the expanse of Victoria's Park was impressive!

We had dinner at Hung Kee (1 Michelin ★) in Hysan Place; the recommended dishes are the beef kuay teow and shrimp wantan noodles. The wantans were big and juicy; the noodles were so springy and fine. The beef kuay teow was okay -- sorry Penang char kuay teow will trump this anytime! XD

We took a tram ride back to the hotel and snuggled in for a good night's sleep before Day 2 :)
